key features
Rare Pippy Oak — individually selected boards with natural pips, burr clusters and expressive grain
Single full‑width board — uninterrupted grain cut to your chosen length for a seamless, premium look
Hand‑shaped live edges — both the shelf front and rack body follow the natural contour of the tree
Integrated shelf — shaped from the same board for perfect grain continuity and organic depth
Cast‑iron treble hooks — weighty, durable hardware chosen for everyday use
Made to order — crafted individually with natural variation that makes every piece unique
A live edge coat rack with integrated shelf made from full tree‑width Pippy Oak, refined slowly by hand to keep its own natural movement and character at the centre of the piece. The shelf follows the natural contour of the live edge, preserving the gentle curve, pips and grain transitions that make each board genuinely one‑of‑a‑kind. This creates a warm, organic presence that adds depth and texture to hallways, entrance spaces and modern interiors.
Each piece is shaped, sanded and finished with a slow, deliberate approach that ensures a smooth, practical surface suited to everyday use. Natural clusters are stabilised with clear joinery‑grade epoxy, keeping the live edge expressive while remaining functional. Solid cast‑iron treble hooks provide weight and balance, and every rack arrives fully finished and ready to hang, designed to be both useful and quietly striking from the moment it’s installed.
The Wood
We work with rare, naturally occurring Pippy Oak — a character grade that only forms in a small percentage of oak trees. The pips, burr clusters and expressive figuring cannot be commercially grown, making each board genuinely unique.
Boards are sourced from a local sawmill in full‑width lengths, allowing your rack and shelf to be cut from a single board while keeping the grain uninterrupted. Each board is individually selected for movement, warmth and natural contour.
Every piece is kiln‑dried for stability and treated with Sika 5‑Star before shaping begins.
The natural bark is removed by hand, allowing us to preserve as much character as possible. The live edge is refined to a smooth, organic finish that follows the natural contour of the tree.
This careful preparation ensures the wood retains its expressive grain transitions, pips and burr clusters — the natural features that make Pippy Oak so distinctive.
craftsmanship and making
We hand‑plane the non‑live‑edge surfaces of the rack and shelf, preserving the expressive grain transitions and pips that machine planers would tear out. The live edge is shaped only with hand tools, keeping its natural movement intact.
The shelf is supported by matching Pippy Oak struts, joined using traditional dowel‑and‑glue construction. The exposed dowels reinforce the overlap join and highlight the honesty of the build — a detail that takes longer to execute but creates a stronger, longer‑lasting structure.
Any deeper natural cluster voids in the shelf surface are stabilised with clear joinery‑grade epoxy, keeping the oak robust while preserving the clarity of the grain.
Once assembled, the entire piece is refined through multiple sanding stages, with hand‑finishing for a smooth, tactile surface that highlights the depth and movement of the grain.
The rack is fitted with 2 or 3 recessed keyhole fixings, allowing for a secure, flush‑mount installation.
Each piece is made to order, allowing time for careful shaping, sanding, finishing and curing.
The Finish
Each rack receives two coats of Fiddes Hard Wax Oil (Natural) — a premium British‑made hard‑wax oil chosen for its warm, natural feel and long‑lasting protection. The first coat penetrates and seals the timber; the second builds depth, enhances the grain and provides a durable, hard‑wearing finish.
Once cured, the surface is refined with a hand‑applied coat of artisan beeswax polish, adding a subtle sheen and a smooth, tactile feel.
This finishing system protects the oak while keeping the natural character of the Pippy Oak fully visible — highlighting the pips, burr clusters and expressive grain movement that make each piece unique.
