Each Landscape Edition rack begins with a single full‑width Pippy Oak board, chosen for its natural movement and expressive live edge. The contour of the board is studied and accurately matched to a real British landscape, creating a ridge line that feels both organic and familiar. This match is unique to each piece — the silhouette you see is the board’s own natural shape, refined by hand and paired with the landscape it most closely resembles.
The live edge is debarked and shaped slowly to preserve its natural character, while the remaining edges are refined for a clean, modern profile. Weighty cast‑iron hooks add balance and practicality, and recessed keyhole fixings keep the rack tight to the wall with no visible screws. Every rack is ready‑made and one‑of‑a‑kind, crafted individually in our UK workshop and finished for everyday use.
The Wood
We work with rare, naturally occurring Pippy Oak — a character grade that cannot be commercially grown. Only a small percentage of oak trees ever develop the pips, burr clusters and expressive figuring that define this timber, making each board genuinely scarce. Our timber is sourced in full tree‑width lengths from a local sawmill, giving us boards with uninterrupted grain, warm tone and natural movement.
Each board is kiln‑dried for stability and treated with Sika 5‑Star for long‑term protection before any shaping begins. We select every piece individually for its contour, grain flow and expressive edge line — the natural features that allow us to match the live edge accurately to a real British landscape. This careful selection ensures the finished rack feels true to the timber and true to the landscape it represents.
Craftsmanship and making
Each rack begins with a natural live edge, carefully debarked and refined by hand to preserve the organic contour and the expressive features within the timber. This edge is shaped slowly, following the board’s own movement so the silhouette stays true to the landscape it represents. The remaining edges are refined to create a clean, modern profile without interrupting the natural flow of the grain.
Where needed, planing is done entirely by hand to protect burr clusters, pips and grain transitions that machine planers would remove. This slow, careful approach keeps the timber’s character intact and ensures the ridge line remains faithful to the board’s original shape. Every piece is then sanded through multiple grits to achieve a smooth, tactile finish that feels premium to the touch.
Each rack is fitted with recessed metal keyhole fixings, set into the timber for a secure, flush mount. We include bear‑claw screws — premium fixings designed to pull the rack tight to the wall for a confident, close fit. All shaping, sanding and finishing is completed in our UK workshop, where each piece is crafted individually and prepared for everyday use.
The Finish
Each rack is finished with Fiddes Hard Wax Oil (Natural) — a British‑made blend chosen for its balance of protection and natural feel. Applied in thin, even coats, it enhances the depth of the Pippy Oak grain while keeping a warm, tactile surface that still feels like real wood, never plasticised or glossy. The finish settles gently into the burr clusters, pips and grain transitions, bringing out the expressive movement within the timber.
Once cured, a final coat of artisan beeswax polish is applied by hand, adding a subtle sheen and an additional layer of surface protection while allowing the oak to breathe naturally. Every coat is applied and buffed by hand, ensuring an even, consistent finish that complements the board’s natural contour and the landscape‑matched ridge line.
