A live edge coat rack made from full tree‑width Pippy Oak, refined slowly by hand to keep its own natural movement and character at the centre of the piece. The live edge is shaped only where needed, preserving the gentle curve, pips and grain transitions that make each board genuinely one‑of‑a‑kind. The result is a warm, organic presence that brings depth and texture to hallways, entrance spaces and modern interiors.
Every rack is shaped, sanded and finished with a slow, deliberate approach that ensures a smooth, tactile feel in daily use. Solid cast iron hooks add weight and balance, while recessed keyhole fixings keep the rack sitting cleanly against the wall. It arrives ready to hang, practical for everyday use yet expressive enough to become part of the home the moment it’s installed.
The Wood
We work with rare, naturally occurring Pippy Oak — a character grade that forms in only a small percentage of oak trees. The pips, burr clusters and expressive figuring can’t be farmed or commercially grown, which is why each board has its own movement and personality.
Our boards come from a local sawmill in full‑width lengths, so your rack is cut to the exact size you choose while keeping the grain completely uninterrupted. Every piece is individually selected for warmth, contour and natural character.
Each board is kiln‑dried for stability and treated with Sika 5‑Star before shaping begins, giving you a solid, long‑lasting rack that’s built to stay beautiful for years.
Craftsmanship and making
Each rack begins with a natural live edge, carefully debarked and refined by hand to preserve the board’s organic contour. Every curve, rise and dip is shaped individually — never machined — so the natural movement of the oak stays intact.
The remaining edges are lightly softened to create a clean, modern profile while keeping the board’s characterful flow.
Cut from a single full‑width board, each piece is chosen for its strongest pips, burr clusters and grain movement, giving your rack a richer, more expressive finish.
The board is hand‑planed to protect burr clusters, pips and grain transitions that machine planers would remove. Every rack is sanded through multiple grits using a blend of machine sanding and hand‑refinement. This multi‑stage process creates a smooth, tactile surface that highlights the depth of the grain — a finish single‑stage sanding cannot achieve.
Each rack is fitted with recessed metal keyhole fixings for a flush mount, and solid cast‑iron treble hinge hooks chosen for their weight, durability and traditional character.
The Finish
Each rack receives two coats of Fiddes Hard Wax Oil (Natural) — a premium British‑made hard‑wax oil chosen for its warm, natural feel and long‑lasting protection. The first coat penetrates and seals the timber; the second builds depth, enhances the grain and creates a durable, easy‑care finish.
Once fully cured, the surface is hand‑polished with a beeswax finish, adding a subtle sheen and a smooth, tactile feel.
This combination protects the timber while keeping the natural character of Pippy Oak fully visible — highlighting the pips, burr clusters and grain movement that make every rack genuinely one‑of‑a‑kind.
Dimensions and Options
Your rack is made to order in the length you choose, crafted from a single full‑width Pippy Oak board selected individually for its strongest pips, burr clusters and grain movement.
The live edge has a minimum depth of over 10 cm at its lowest point, with natural variation along the board — part of the organic contour that makes each piece unique. The timber is 2.5 cm thick (1 inch), giving the rack a solid, weighty feel while keeping a clean, modern profile.
Because every board has its own natural shape and character, the exact appearance will vary slightly — this is what makes each rack genuinely one‑of‑a‑kind.
Hooks are solid cast‑iron treble hinge hooks, spaced proportionally to suit both the length you select and the natural features of the board. Before we begin, we’ll send you a photo of your exact board along with our suggested hook positioning for approval.
Your rack arrives fully finished, ready to hang, with recessed keyhole fixings and bear‑claw screws included.
Custom sizes are available on request.
