Handmade in the UK — individually shaped, refined and finished in our Lincolnshire workshop
A live edge shelf made from full tree‑width Pippy Oak, refined slowly by hand to keep its own natural movement and character at the centre of the piece. The front edge is shaped only where needed, preserving the gentle curve, pips and grain transitions that make each board genuinely one‑of‑a‑kind. This creates a warm, organic presence that adds depth and texture to modern interiors, hallways and entrance spaces.
Each shelf is shaped, sanded and finished with a slow, deliberate approach that ensures a smooth, practical surface suited to everyday use. Natural clusters are stabilised with clear furniture‑grade epoxy, keeping the live edge expressive while remaining functional. Solid cast iron brackets provide strength and balance, and every shelf arrives fully finished and ready to hang, designed to be both useful and quietly striking from the moment it’s installed.
The Wood
We work with rare, naturally occurring Pippy Oak — a character grade that only forms in a small percentage of oak trees. The pips, burr clusters and expressive figuring cannot be commercially grown, making each board genuinely unique.
Boards are sourced from a local sawmill in full‑width lengths, allowing your shelf to be cut to the exact size you choose while keeping the grain uninterrupted. Every board is individually selected for movement, warmth and natural contour.
Each piece is kiln‑dried for stability and treated with Sika 5‑Star before shaping begins.
craftsmanship and making
Each shelf begins with a natural live edge, carefully debarked and refined by hand to preserve the board’s organic contour. Every curve, rise and dip is shaped individually — never machined.
The remaining edges are lightly softened to create a clean, modern profile while keeping the board’s natural movement intact.
Cut from a single full‑width board, each piece is chosen for its strongest pips, burr clusters and grain transitions, giving your shelf a richer, more characterful finish.
The board is hand‑planed to protect burr clusters and grain transitions that machine planers would remove.
Any deeper natural clusters or voids are stabilised with clear furniture‑grade epoxy, creating a smooth, refined surface ideal for shelves while preserving the character of the wood.
Every shelf is sanded through multiple grits using a combination of machine sanding and hand‑refinement. This multi‑stage process creates a smooth, tactile surface that highlights the depth of the grain — a finish that single‑stage machine sanding cannot achieve.
Each shelf is made to order, allowing time for careful shaping, refinement and finishing.
The Finish
Each shelf receives two coats of Fiddes Hard Wax Oil (Natural) — a premium British‑made hard‑wax oil chosen for its warm, natural feel and long‑lasting protection. The first coat penetrates and seals the timber; the second builds depth, enhances the grain and provides a more durable finish.
Once cured, the surface is further enhanced with a hand‑applied coat of artisan beeswax polish, adding a subtle sheen and a smooth, tactile feel.
This combination protects the timber while keeping the natural character of the Pippy Oak fully visible — highlighting the pips, burr clusters and grain movement that make each shelf unique.
dimensions and Options
This shelf is made to order in the length you choose. Each piece is crafted from a single full‑width Pippy Oak board selected individually for its strongest pips, burr clusters and grain movement.
The minimum depth is 18–20 cm at the shallowest point of the live edge. Depth will vary naturally along the board as part of the live‑edge contour.
The wood thickness is 2.5 cm (1 inch) of solid Pippy Oak, giving the shelf a strong, weighty feel while keeping a clean, modern profile.
Because every board has its own natural contour and character, the exact appearance will vary slightly — this is part of what makes each shelf unique.
You can choose Traditional Twist or Floating cast‑iron brackets.
Traditional Twist brackets are supplied with 8 screws, and Floating Shelf brackets with 12 screws.
Bracket holes can be pre‑drilled on request for easier installation and perfect alignment.
Custom sizes are available on request.
