Handmade in the UK — individually shaped, refined and finished in our Lincolnshire workshop
Each sill begins as a full‑width board selected for its natural pips, burr clusters and character grain. Known as Pippy Oak in the UK and Burl/Knotty Oak in the USA and Canada, this timber offers a distinctive, organic look with warm tonal variation and natural movement.
The live edge is shaped and softened by hand to preserve the natural contour of the tree. The surface is finished with hard‑wax oil and beeswax polish, creating a smooth, durable finish suited to everyday use in kitchens, living rooms, bathrooms and cottage interiors.
Before crafting begins, we send you a photo of your exact board so you can approve the grain, pippy clusters and natural edge profile. Nothing is made until you’re happy.
The Wood
We work with rare, naturally occurring Pippy Oak — a character grade that only forms in a small percentage of oak trees. The pips, burr clusters and expressive figuring cannot be commercially grown, making each board genuinely unique.
Boards are sourced from a local sawmill in full‑width lengths, allowing your shelf to be cut to the exact size you choose while keeping the grain uninterrupted. Every board is individually selected for movement, warmth and natural contour.
Each piece is kiln‑dried for stability and treated with Sika 5‑Star before shaping begins.
craftsmanship and making
Each sill begins with a natural live edge, carefully debarked and refined by hand to preserve the board’s organic contour. Every curve, rise and dip is shaped individually — never machined.
The remaining edges are lightly softened to create a clean, modern profile while keeping the board’s natural movement intact.
Cut from a single full‑width board, each piece is chosen for its strongest pips, burr clusters and grain transitions, giving your shelf a richer, more characterful finish.
The board is hand‑planed to protect burr clusters and grain transitions that machine planers would remove.
Any deeper natural clusters or voids are stabilised with clear furniture‑grade epoxy, creating a smooth, refined surface ideal for shelves while preserving the character of the wood.
Every sill is sanded through multiple grits using a combination of machine sanding and hand‑refinement. This multi‑stage process creates a smooth, tactile surface that highlights the depth of the grain — a finish that single‑stage machine sanding cannot achieve.
Each sill is made to order, allowing time for careful shaping, refinement and finishing.
The Finish
Each sill receives two coats of Fiddes Hard Wax Oil (Natural) — a premium British‑made hard‑wax oil chosen for its warm, natural feel and long‑lasting protection. The first coat penetrates and seals the timber; the second builds depth, enhances the grain and provides a more durable finish.
Once cured, the surface is further enhanced with a hand‑applied coat of artisan beeswax polish, adding a subtle sheen and a smooth, tactile feel.
This combination protects the timber while keeping the natural character of the Pippy Oak fully visible — highlighting the pips, burr clusters and grain movement that make each shelf unique.
dimensions and Options
This window sill is made to order in the length you choose. Each piece is crafted from a single full‑width Pippy Oak board selected individually for its strongest pips, burr clusters and grain movement.
Depth
Window sills naturally vary in depth because of the live edge. Choose the minimum depth you need — 15cm, 18cm or 22cm — and your sill will be deeper in places depending on the natural shape of the oak.
Length
Measure the distance from one side of your window opening to the other. If your walls are uneven, measure at the front edge where the sill will sit.
Flush Fit Option
If you prefer a flush fit with no front overhang, measure the exact width of your opening and select that length. Add “flush fit” in the order notes and we’ll craft it to sit neatly inside the space.
Thickness
Approx. 2.5cm, varying slightly with the natural board.
