Hand‑selected and shaped from expressive Pippy Oak, this slim vertical coat rack is designed for homes where space is limited but natural materials still matter. The upright format lets the grain run the full height of the piece, showing gentle movement, small clusters of pips and the warm tone that defines this characterful timber.
Each rack is crafted individually in our Lincolnshire workshop, refined by hand to follow the board’s natural contour and fitted with weighty cast‑iron hooks. The result is a quiet, practical piece of hardwood furniture — compact in footprint, but full of the natural Pippy Oak character that makes every Thriverton piece unique.
The Wood
We hand‑select full tree‑width Pippy Oak boards from our local sawmill, choosing each one in person for its warm tone, natural movement and the small clusters of pips that give this timber its unmistakable character.
You’ll see cat’s‑paw figuring, tiny burrs and gentle shifts in the grain, all naturally formed as the tree grows. Every board is unique, but all are chosen for the same expressive Pippy character.
craftmanship and making
Each rack is made to order in our small UK workshop, shaped slowly and intentionally so the natural character of the Pippy Oak stays at the centre of the piece. The board is debarked and cut to size before being worked by hand, with every stage focused on keeping the gentle movement, pips and figuring that make this timber so distinctive.
The vertical format is refined with careful hand‑shaping, following the board’s own contour rather than imposing a straight line onto it. This approach keeps the natural transitions in the grain intact and gives the rack its quiet, organic presence. The edges are then profiled by hand, softening the outline and creating a smooth, comfortable feel that works beautifully in everyday use.
Once the shaping is complete, the rack is sanded through several grades to bring the surface to a clean, tactile finish. Every step — from the first cut to the final sanding — is carried out with the same slow, deliberate approach, ensuring the piece feels both practical and true to the character of the timber before it moves on to finishing.
The Finish
Each rack is finished with two coats of hard‑wax oil, chosen for its warm, natural tone and long‑lasting protection. The oil absorbs into the Pippy Oak rather than sitting on the surface, enhancing the grain and bringing out the depth of the timber without adding shine. Once cured, the piece is hand‑buffed to a smooth, tactile feel that works beautifully in everyday use.
The finish is applied slowly and in thin layers, allowing the oak to take the oil evenly so the colour stays consistent across the board. After the final coat, the rack is left to cure fully before any beeswax is added, giving the surface a gentle, natural sheen that complements the expressive character of the Pippy Oak.
The result is a finish that feels warm, durable and easy to live with — protective enough for daily use, but subtle enough to keep the timber’s natural movement and tone at the centre of the piece.
dimensions and Options
The vertical rack is available in 35 cm and 50 cm heights, with custom sizes offered if you need a specific fit. Every piece is cut from solid Pippy Oak, measuring 10 cm wide and 2.5 cm (1") thick, giving the rack a sturdy, weighty feel while keeping a slim profile that works beautifully in narrow spaces.
You can choose between Traditional Coat Hooks or Treble Hinge Hooks, both made from solid cast iron and selected for their strength and everyday practicality. Each rack arrives ready to hang, fitted with two recessed metal keyhole fixings on the back so it sits flush to the wall. Screws are supplied for a secure and simple installation.
