The Wood
The Tiger Oak we use is quarter‑sawn European Oak with a naturally bold grain pattern created by medullary rays. This cut produces the distinctive “tiger stripe” effect — straight, consistent flecks that run across the board.
It’s a stable, durable hardwood with low movement, making it ideal for serving boards, kitchenware and premium homeware. Tiger Oak finishes cleanly, sands smoothly and develops a rich, warm tone when treated with food‑safe hardwax oil.
The Process
Each piece is made to order in our small UK workshop. The Pippy Oak is debarked and cut to size for your piece, then shaped, edged and sanded smooth to keep the natural movement and character intact. Any natural voids created by features from the Pippy Oak are filled with clear epoxy stabilising the area and providing a practical surface.
The Finish
Each shelf is finished with two coats of Fiddes Hard Wax Oil (Natural) for a durable, low‑sheen surface that protects the oak while keeping its warm, natural tone. Once cured, we hand‑buff the piece with a light beeswax polish to bring out the depth of the grain without adding shine. It’s a traditional, long‑lasting finish that feels smooth, natural and easy to live with.
